About Sending Monarchs Home:
I didn’t see many Monarch butterflies this past summer or fall. I missed them. I missed their beauty; flying into and gracing what might otherwise be unremarkable space. I marvel, even more, at the stupendous journey across the continent they make from their home in Mexico to visit here.
I came upon one late this past fall at Wave Hill Public Gardens in Westchester County NY where my wife and I were strolling. “Look” I said to her with as much joy as surprise, “a Monarch.” It was then I realized how much they had been missed. I also was worried that this butterfly had not as yet made its journey home and I was concerned that it might not be able to if it lingered here much longer.
I wondered how it would get home. That’s what I was thinking when I made Sending Monarchs Home. I imagined a magical breath blown, much like making a wish on a dandelion, blowing strong enough to lift them up and onward to home.
I hope it made it. I’ll know better next summer when I see it again.
