Nurturing, caring, loving, giving, accepting, holding, generations. Add to that a clear early summers morning on Brighton Beach Brooklyn’s Bay 1, with the ocean water as calm as a lake and no one on the sands except my grandmother and me.
That’s the feeling I’ve carried with me about that moment for the past 65 years. The beach may have been populated with others dotting the shore; in the water or on beach blankets but in my minds eye nothing existed in that early morning moment when my grandmother led me, a nine year old, into the water. She was going to teach me how to float. I lay back cradled in her supportive hands, head back, arms and legs spread wide, looking up at the blue sky and her.
